At the Acacia Center, we will help your child grow and gain opportunities as an English language learner while honoring his or her rich cultural heritage.
Getting Started
We will begin our work together by learning about your child’s particular language learning needs. You may have noticed that your child has difficulty with reading, writing, speaking, listening, or understanding the English language. We can help.
Our Approach
We focus on helping your child build skills that will improve his or her to communicate in English both verbally and through writing. This includes improving grammar skills, strengthening vocabulary, and understanding how to use the English language effectively and in a culturally appropriate way. Our methods are rooted in educational theory and we regularly evaluate your child’s progress to make sure the work we are doing is effective.
Step One
We begin our work by identifying your child’s English language limitations and strengths and whether their primary home language is other than English (PHLOTE). We then evaluate their proficiency in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. As mentioned, we evaluate their progress throughout their time with us in order to determine when your child no longer has limited English proficiency (LEP) and is ready to exit the program.
Empowering You
In everything we do, we strive to empower you and your family as you navigate the landscape of rights, responsibilities, and resources. Our experience with both direct practice and educational policy will help us empower you as you seek resources and an understanding of the laws that pertain to you and your family. We can help you discover what accommodations and modifications may be available to your family and serve as companions to you on your journey.

Individualized Education Plans
An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is a written document intended to help children reach specific education goals that may otherwise be difficult to attain. Each IEP must be designed for one student and must be a truly individualized document. The IEP creates an opportunity for teachers, parents, school administrators, related services personnel and students (when appropriate) to work together to improve academic, behavioral and social skills that apply to the needs of the individual child. To obtain an IEP, your child must first be identified for special educational services and from there, a multi-step process begins that will ensure your child receives the appropriate services and support needed to succeed.
At the Acacia Center, we believe that a well-formed and highly individualized IEP can be the start of a successful journey to reading comprehension and writing proficiency. We will work with you to build an IEP that meets your child’s specific needs and is geared toward her success.
